Community walk, vigil to be held in wake of teen suicides in Cape Breton

A community walk and vigil to remember several teenagers who have taken their own lives in Cape Breton is being held Friday night.

An organizer of the event says that the recent suicides of three teenagers amounts to a crisis and that the community is deeply saddened and in shock. Nicole MacLean with the Salvation Army says the vigil is intended to impart a message of hope, love and acceptance.

The walk will start at Centre 200 in Sydney, N.S., at 8 p.m. on Friday and end at the Salvation Army Sydney Community Church.

MacLean said community members will be given glow sticks during the walk, which will end with a vigil.

She says the event will shed light on a situation that needs attention, support and resources.
