A prominent child psychologist is expressing concern over a recent decision to return a Nova Scotia teen to the custody of his grandparents.
Doctor Charles Emmerys says he's been following the case of the young, Cole Harbour boy for months.
Emmerys says after all the boy has gone through, including months in an institution in Bayswater, Ontario, sending him home is not the wise thing to do. "Because when you do that, the rates of school failure, of homelessness, of delinquency and of imprisonment is much higher," says Emmerys.
His suggestion is for Community Services to offer the boy and his family more help, including possible foster care before returning him to his family.
The boy's grandmother (who cannot be identified) admits she sees challenges on the horizon. "We're kind of nervous, but with God's help and if community services comes around and helps us put the right people in place for this child," she says.
The province initially sent the boy away because he could not be helped here. He'll head home to his grandparents on September 28.
