Teens stranded at Frog Pond after thin ice gives way

Rescue prompts warnings from emergency officials

Emergency officials and meteorologists are warning the public to stay off the ice after three boys had to be rescued from a local pond.

The teens ventured onto some thin ice on Frog Pond, off Purcell's Cove Road, around 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Staff Sergeant Barb Saunders Halifax Regional Police says fortunately, a nearby resident phoned 911.

"They made a call to the police indicating that there were three children on the ice, and the ice seemed to be breaking up around them." she said.

Firefighters, police and paramedics found three teen boys on a rock, about 10 feet offshore. The ice was too thin to reach the boys, so firefighters waded through waist-deep water and broken ice to retrieve them.

Two of the boys were taken to hospital for observation.

Ice is rapidly melting away because of a recent warm spell, and News 95.7 meteorologist Richard Zurawski says it doesn't look like that's about to change.

"It doesn't look like we're going to be getting anything," he said. "Right now the next ten days on the forecast is looking like it's going to be way above seasonal values."

HRM's ice thickness report indicates all lakes and ponds have open water.
