Chronicle Herald staff vote for strike action

Amy Arts Feb 05, 2012 07:11:03 AM
With the city in the grips of a Metro Transit strike, some of the journalists and photographers who have been covering the story may soon be on a picket line of their own.

Unionized members of the province's biggest newspaper have voted 96% in favor strike action. The big issue at hand is the Chronicle Herald's proposal to cut the starting salary for reporters and photographers by $12,000 a year.

In a news release sent out Saturday, Union Local 30310 president Stephen Forest said, "The membership is very clear that the company's plan to turn back the clock on salaries is unacceptable."

Talks between the two sides are scheduled to begin on Wednesday.
