Stolen bike could explode, police warn

Scott Simpson Sep 26, 2011 15:12:43 PM
Police get a lot of calls about stolen bikes, but never about stolen bikes that could explode like a grenade. Not until now.

A Norco Bush Pilot bicycle equipped with a one-of-a-kind engine was stolen from Cabot Street in Halifax, and halifax constable brian palmeter tells News95.7 it's that engine that's the big concern.

"What we've been told is that this motor requires a special mixture of fuel, and without it, regular fuel for example, does have the potential of causing an explosion which would certainly put anyone near the bike or riding the bike at risk of injury," said Palmeter.

The owner has posted a Kijiji ad offering a $250 reward for the bike, which is equipped with a fuel cell and a highly modified Zenoah GoPed motor.

"This is a prototype engine - it is the only one of its kind and potentially VERY dangerous if fueled incorrectly (will grenade violently)," reads the ad. "It was/is part of a locally supported fuel economy/low emissions commuter project."

Anyone with information is asked to call police or Crime Stoppers.
