Opposition underwhelmed by fall sitting
After 35 days in the legislature, Nova Scotia's opposition leaders are voicing their discontent with the fall session. Liberal leader Stephen McNeil says he's disappointed with the NDP government's first round - and so are Nova Scotians. "Low-income Nova Scotians were expecting 450 dollars in a keep the heat rebate now that's been slashed to 200 dollars," McNeil said. "There are many Nova Scotians who were promised a 400 dollar a month caregiver allowance, now we come to find out many of them were rejected. Tory interim leader Karen Casey says there has been a lack of leadership and direction on a few fronts including the roll out of the H1N1 vaccination plan. "When I was Minister of Health that cause had already begun with the federal minister, so it was nothing new," said Casey. "Then to all of sudden not have a plan, or to open the doors to everyone knowing the supply was limited." Meanwhile, Nova Scotia's premier is congratulating his party on it's first session in the legislature as government. Premier Darrell Dexter is counting the NDP's accomplishments during it's 35 days in the house of assembly "Everything now is a historic first, the speech from the throne, the budget, the government's legislative program," Dexter said. "Government worked hard throughout the session and has kept the commitments we've made." His session saw 30 bills pass, all of which were NDP papers but many of which were based on Tory work. The spring session may define the party as it attempts to balance the budget. Dexter says they will spend the next three years putting the province's finances back in black. |
