Vaccination program expanded for Nova Scotians

The province now says there is enough H1N1 vaccine coming that the high risk groups can be expanded.
Pregnant women and kids under five were the target for the vaccines in Nova Scotia through the beginning of this week.

However effective immediately, the province's department of health is expanding the vaccination program to include those 19-years-old and under with chronic conditions.

People in the following groups will now be eligible to receive H1N1 vaccine:

  • Children 19 or younger with chronic medical conditions for which they receive regular medical attention, including morbid obesity
  • Women who have just given birth, and their partners
  • Pregnant women, and women up to four weeks postpartum
  • Children aged six months to younger than five years old
  • People living on First Nations communities
  • Health-care workers in district health authorities, long-term care facilities and home-care agencies who provide direct care to patients. This includes family physicians, family practice nurses, pharmacists and pharmacy technicians.

Chief public health officer Dr. Robert Strang says anyone else who's already been listed as high priority can still line up for the shot.

Health Minister Maureen MacDonald says Nova Scotia is getting 56,000 new doses of the vaccine next week. Equally split between shots for pregnant women and the general public.
