Conditional sentence handed out to Millbrook band manager

TRURO, N.S. - The band manager of the Millbrook First Nation in Nova Scotia has received a conditional sentence after changing his plea to guilty on various drug and weapons charges.
Alex Cope was given house arrest for two years less a day in court today in Truro, N.S.
Cope also received a lifetime firearms ban, will be on probation for three years, and must make a donation of $7,500 to the Millbrook Youth Group.
His common-law wife, Nicole Williams, got a suspended sentence, a year of probation and a 10-year firearms ban after 20 Criminal Code and several drug charges against her were withdrawn by the Crown.
Cope, 45, and Williams, 31, were charged following a search of their Millbrook home on Feb. 9.
Defence lawyer Lance Scaravelli told the court that Cope has been a primary mover of economic growth in the community and will continue in his position as band manager.
