NDP promise of 24/7 emergency rooms may be broken
The provincial NDP might have a tough time keeping its campaign promise of having all hospital emergency rooms open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Barbara Hall with Capital Health says opening the Cobequid Community Health Centre 24 hours a day wouldn't be a good use of resources. "It's time to look at expanding the hours of cobequid, whether it should immediately go to 24-7, I'm not sure about that." Hall says she'd like to take patients until 11 at night, instead of 9. Progressive Conservative MLA and former health minister Chris D'Entremont says the NDP are making promises they can't keep. "The Cobequid issue is one that is interesting, it is one that we looked at wholeheartedly," says D'Entremont. "But there's going to be a substantial investment to put a 24 ER into the Cobequid." The deputy health minister also say there's a chance either the Annapolis or Digby emergency room would close because of staffing issues. He says it will be years before we see 24/7 Emergency room operations across the province.
