Nurse shortage means big OT bills
A shortage of nurses in Nova Scotia means the existing workforce is pulling in a lot of overtime. The CBC reports that 100 nurses in the Capital District Health Authority logged more than 200 overtime hours in the past year. One tripled her base salary by working more than 2200 extra hours, bringing in more than $145,000 in overtime pay. On the flip side - several of the top 100 overtime earners also logged more than 100 hours of sick time per year. A vice president with the health authority says officials are trying to alleviate the problem by creating more spaces in nursing schools and finding other staff to do work that doesn't require a nursing degree. |
