Vaccine shortage forces restrictions as HRM clinics open
Health officials in the Capital District Health Authority have released the schedule for the latest round of community H1N1 vaccination clinics. As clinics open across HRM, the province has restricted vaccinations to only high-risk groups - pregnant women and children between the ages of six months and five years. A complete list of locations and times is on the government's website. Chief public health officer Dr. Robert Strang says he's confident everyone in the priority groups will receive a shot. "We're comfortable going ahead with clinics in these priority groups Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday," he said. "We're going to be evaluating our vaccine supply on a daily basis and if we need to adjust within that, we'll adjust." The restrictions had to be imposed because of a shortage of vaccine, caused by a drop in production by GlaxoSmithKline. Additionally, Canada's chief public health officer, says as recently as a few weeks ago, officials didn't think people would line up for the H1N1 vaccine. "If a year ago we knew exactly what the virus was, what the pandemic was going to be, then the production of vaccine could have taken place," said Dr. David Butler-Jones. "But we're living in real time. We're producing vaccine while we're testing it, while we're distributing it and while we're giving it." GlaxoSmithKline will only be able to make slightly more than 400,000 doses of the vaccine this week -- compared with the one million or so expected. Strang says it's hard to say when the vaccine will be available to the general public. Quebec, Ontario, Alberta and Saskatchewan are only offering the vaccine to at-risk residents as well.
