Canadian sailors readying devastated Caribbean island for hurricane Maria

By The Canadian Press

HALIFAX – The crew of a Canadian warship is being forced to suspend helping residents of a small Caribbean island devastated by hurricane Irma now that hurricane Maria is bearing down on the region.

Cmdr. Gord Noseworthy says the Halifax-based frigate HMCS St. John’s will depart South Caicos on Wednesday.

Noseworthy, the ship’s commanding officer, says he plans to return to the island on Sunday, once Maria moves on.

Speaking from aboard the ship, Noseworthy says the 230-member crew will work hard to prepare the island for Maria before the vessel leaves.

Noseworthy says the 21-square-kilometre island of roughly 1,100 residents was ravaged by Irma.

He says when the ship arrived late last week, there was debris and power lines strewn across the streets, and roofs had been ripped off of buildings.
