International delegates come to Halifax for annual security forum

By Mark Hodgins & Chris Halef

HALIFAX – Delegates from around the world will descend upon Halifax on Friday as the International Security Forum begins.

Topics will include Brexit and Donald Trump, according to the forum’s president.

“There is discontent – and whether that’s with individual leaders or democratic institutions, the burden really is on us to look squarely and honestly at us and say where can these institutions be improved,” said Peter Van Praagh.

Van Praagh said some of the other items on the agenda include populism in continental Europe and the recent referendum in Colombia.

Some of those expected to be in attendance include federal Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan, U.S. republican Senator John McCain, and 2016 vice presidential candidate Tim Kaine.

The forum will run for three days with a focus on issues that security officials must face now and in the future.
