Protesters occupying Muskrat Falls site putting themselves at risk: Nalcor

By The Canadian Press

MUSKRAT FALLS, N.L. – The Crown corporation in charge of the Muskrat Falls megaproject says it is worried about the safety of protesters who broke into the sprawling construction site on the weekend.

Stan Marshall, CEO of Nalcor Energy, issued a statement today saying about 50 protesters entered the Labrador site Saturday and occupied an accommodation complex, prompting the company to remove about 700 workers from the grounds.

Marshall says about two dozen protesters have since moved toward the actual construction site, which he says poses a major risk to the safety of everyone at site.

The CEO says there are many hazards that could cause serious injury to people without proper training and safety equipment.

Marshall is asking the protesters to leave the site and proceed to a designated safety zone outside the main gate, where they can continue their protest.

Meanwhile, the RCMP have closed Route 510, which stretches across eastern Labrador, for “safety concerns.”
