Federal committee to co-ordinate reconstruction in Fort McMurray

Fort McMurray – The Federal government is assembling a special cabinet committee which will organize and aid Fort Murray reconstruction efforts.

Jim Rivait, CEO of the Canadian Homebuilders Association Alberta, said co-ordination between insurance companies, government and builders will help speed up the process.

He added there is a lot to do before Fort McMurray will be ready for shovels, like finding somewhere to put all the contaminated soil.

“The assessment of the infrastructure could take eight to 12 weeks as well,” he said. “It would have to be done with roads that had a raging fire going through and what impact did that do.”

It’s not clear how long it will take to rebuild the city, but Rivait said it takes six months to build a house, and a year to build multi-family units.

Rivait said he believes there is a lot of capacity for people to move within the community, thanks to a high number of homes for sale and spaces for rent.
