Look for ‘respectable’ hiring climate in 4th quarter, says Manpower survey

TORONTO – Canadian employers expect the hiring climate to remain ”respectable” in the fourth quarter, according to the latest Manpower Inc. employment survey.

In a survey of nearly 1,900 employers, 16 per cent told the employment agency they plan to add jobs in the quarter and seven per cent anticipate cutbacks.

Of those surveyed, 75 per cent of employers expect to maintain current staffing levels while two per cent are unsure of their hiring intentions for the quarter.

Manpower Inc. says on a regional basis, employers in Western Canada expect a strong hiring climate in the quarter partly due to the construction and mining sectors.

In Quebec and Atlantic Canada, says Manpower, employers anticipate an upbeat hiring climate for the upcoming quarter.

Employers in Ontario, however, project a modest fourth quarter.

Gains in manufacturing and resources in Ontario are likely to be offset by what Manpower calls ”large-scale workforce reductions” expected elsewhere in Ontario.

”Job seekers in all regions are likely to benefit from a positive hiring climate from October through December,” said Manpower vice-president Byrne Luft.

”Job seekers should maintain confidence in the labour market as employers throughout Canada anticipate the hiring pace will remain steady through the autumn.”

Canada’s economy produced 34,300 new jobs in August, but Statistics Canada reported last Friday that all of the jobs were part-time. The agency also reported heavy losses in August in the goods producing sector, which generally pays higher wages.

All of this left the unemployment rate remained unchanged at 7.3 per cent.
