One dead, one injured after Quebec election results.

Triumph turned to tragedy last night at the victory party of Quebec’s new premier.

Parti Quebecois’ leader Pauline Marois took the stage of the Metropolis club, a Montreal venue, around midnight to address  supporters. As she neared the end of her speech, gunfire rang out and Marois was rushed off stage uninjured.

Two men were shot, one of whom has since died after being rushed to hospital. The other remains in critical condition.

Police arrested a 50-year-old man who is accused in both the shooting and setting a fire in the back alley of the venue.

Witnesses say the suspect was heard shouting “The Anglos are waking up” as police took him away.

Marois did return to the stage to wrap up her speech. She is the first female premier of Quebec, leading a Parti Quebecois minority. The Liberals will form the official opposition.

Marois has high hopes for her run in office.

“I will lead a government that will listen to Quebecers and who now know we will govern in a responsible manner in the public interest” she said during her victory speech.
