UBC prof calling for flat tax and duty exemption

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Even though the Loonie is down from the highs we’ve seen lately, lots of people will still be crossing the border this weekend.

If you are planning to do some shopping in the US, you might like the idea being floated by a professor at UBC. Keith Head is calling for a flat $750 tax and duty exemption for all Canadians travelling to the US, including shoppers who just head over for a few hours.

He believes introducing higher exemption limits would save you money and let border guards focus on more important things like security. But retail experts on this side of the border tell the Vancouver Sun raising the limit could hurt our economy.

Current exemptions:
Same-day visits: No exemption
Visits of 24 hours or more: $50
Visits of 48 hours or more: $400
Visits of 7 days or more: $750
