Harper would double child fitness tax credit, include adults once deficit erased

OTTAWA – Prime Minister Stephen Harper is promising to immediately double the children’s fitness tax credit to $1,000.

And he says a Conservative government will introduce a $500 fitness tax credit for adults once the federal budget is balanced.

Harper says an expert panel will decide which activities qualify for the credit.

He says the total cost to the treasury of the kids program would be $145 million a year, while the adult program would cost $275 million annually.

The announcement comes as Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff prepares to give Canadians a detailed look at his entire campaign platform, including its price tag.

The party is releasing its full platform in Ottawa and will hold an online townhall meeting where viewers can ask Ignatieff questions.

Conservative’s aren’t waiting for their rivals platform to be revealed before attacking it. Cabinet minister John Baird has already labelled the Liberal platform as too expensive.

NDP Leader Jack Layton is in Gatineau, Que., visiting a maple sugar shack — his ninth straight day of campaigning, despite nursing a broken hip.

Bloc Quebecois Leader Gilles Duceppe is travelling to Quebec’s Eastern Townships, while Green Leader Elizabeth May remains in her B.C. riding.
