Homegrown terrorism an emerging threat, Canada’s public safety minister says

TORONTO, Ont. – Canada’s public safety minister said the terrorism case unfolding in Ottawa points to an emerging problem of homegrown terrorism.

Three men were arrested on terrorism charges Thursday. The Ottawa Citizen reported Friday that a fourth person has been arrested.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper said these arrests should remind Canadians they face real threats.

Harper said Canadians shouldn’t assume terrorism is something that happens only in other countries.

Public Safety Minister Vic Toews said Canadians should vigilant to any signs of homegrown terrorism.

Farzana Hassan, president of the Canadian Muslim Congress, has called on the Muslim community to end it’s silence and speak out against the jihadist message.

Meanwhile, a former CSIS manager, told CTV his sources suggest the alleged prime target of the Ottawa plot was Parliament Hill.
