Canadian premiers to discuss experimental MS treatment

Canada’s premiers are set to discuss an experimental treatment for multiple sclerosis at a meeting later this week.

The provincial and territorial leaders are meeting in Winnipeg on Thursday to discuss the economy, water issues and health care.

Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall tells CBC he’s hoping to convince his colleagues to add the experimental MS therapy known as “liberation treatment” to the list of provincially insured health services.

But Premier Darrell Dexter says Nova Scotia won’t fund clinical trials for the proposed therapy just because Saskatchewan has made the decision to do so.

Canadian MS patients who have paid for the procedure in Europe claim the results are life-altering, but Dexter says it’s not prudent to fund an unproven therapy.
