Pooch scratches new turf as Delta Police unleash crime program

DELTA, B.C. – It’s the first day on the job for the newest member of a suburban Vancouver police department but there’s a good chance this rookie already has his duties licked.

The Delta Police Department has partnered with the Pacific Assistance Dog Society to offer a program that has never been tried in Canada.

A two-year-old yellow lab is training with Delta’s Police Victim Services Section to provide support and reassurance to victims of crime or trauma.

The dog will be assessed over the next several weeks to ensure he and his handlers work well together and that he adapts to his environment.

Police hope the pooch will help calm people who are frightened or distraught and assist officers trying to reach out to children and the disabled, or anyone with communication difficulties.

Delta residents may see the lab out in the community but officials say the dog’s name won’t be officially released until he completes his training and transition.
