Queen’s last full day in Canada filled with technological marvels

TORONTO – The Queen has a busy schedule in Ontario today as she explores Canadian technological advancements and innovations.

Her visits to the maker of the BlackBerry and a 3D film production facility will be in contrast to the more traditional day she had Sunday.

The Queen and Prince Philip spent Sunday morning in church and their afternoon watching the Queen’s Plate, the oldest continuously run stakes race in North America.

Today, as she prepares to wind down her 22nd Canadian tour, she will visit Research in Motion in Waterloo, Ont., and Pinewood Toronto Studios.

At night, the royal couple will attend a dinner hosted by the federal government and the Queen will give her fourth and final speech of this royal tour.

Prince Philip will also be presenting the Duke of Edinburgh Awards, a program that encourages youth to participate in community service, among other areas.

It has been rumoured that the Queen will receive a BlackBerry, RIM’s ubiquitous product. Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty is scheduled to give the royal couple gifts at the end of their tour of RIM.

In Waterloo, the Queen is set to tour RIM’s assembly facilities and attend a reception with RIM employees. From there the royal couple will fly from Waterloo back to Toronto, where they will go to Pinewood Toronto Studios.

There they will attend a luncheon hosted by the province and tour 3D film production facilities. Pinewood is Canada’s largest film and television production complex, with seven soundstages and more than 23,000 square metres of production space.

Monday’s schedule takes the Queen, 84, and Prince Philip, 89, from 10 a.m. to about 9 p.m.

So far the royal couple has also visited Halifax, Ottawa and Winnipeg on their nine-day Canadian tour. They head for New York after leaving Toronto on Tuesday.
