Canadian soldier killed in Kabul suicide bombing

KANDAHAR, AFGHANISTAN – A New Brunswick-based Canadian soldier killed today in a suicide car bombing in Afghanistan has been identified as Col. Geoff Parker.

Parker, 42, was the former commander of the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Canadian Regiment, based at CFB Gagetown.

He is the highest-ranking member of the Canadian Forces to die in Afghanistan since the mission began in 2002.

Parker died along with five U.S. troops and at least twelve Afghan civilians when a suicide bomber believed to be linked to the Taliban detonated a car packed with explosives next to a NATO convoy.

A spokesperson for CFB Gagetown declined to comment and directed questions to the Department of National Defence in Ottawa.
