Sidney’s golden puck is home in Canada

The puck that Cole Harbour’s Sidney Crosby shot past Team USA’s Ryan Miller in overtime of the gold medal game is now home in Canada.
It was installed Wednesday as the signature attraction in an Olympic exhibit at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.
Dozens of fans and television cameras were on hand as Hall of Famer Ron Ellis carefully placed the golden puck into the display case.
“It was a defining moment, I think for the current generation of Canadians,” says Arvin Prasad, who was among the first fans to catch a glimpse of the puck. “It signalled our unity as a nation and gave hope to the youth of today so I think it meant quite a bit.”
There had been some uncertainty over the puck’s location. A Finnish linesman had retrieved it from the net after Crosby scored in overtime to beat the U.S. in the title game at the Vancouver Olympics. The linesman then couriered the puck to the International Ice Hockey Federation headquarters in Switzerland.
However, the puck now sits next to items like Sidney Crosby’s hockey pants and Dany Heatley’s Olympic socks.
Twenty-seven pucks were used in the gold-medal game, five of which were used in the overtime frame. VANOC plans to auction off four of the overtime pucks on its website. Meanwhile the the winning puck will make its permanent home in Toronto with plans in the works to have it tour the country.
