Halifax police see spike in tickets for drivers misusing bus lanes

By Shelli Summers

HALIFAX – Regional police laid the hammer down on drivers misusing bus lanes this week, issuing tickets to Haligonians trying to beat the congestion.

But those attempts to save time ended up costing ticketed drivers $180 a pop.

Construction slowdowns, delays and closures have been testing the patience of drivers recently, and traffic division Const. Shawn Currie tells Metro News he hopes that once the work finishes up, the violations will ease up.

Currie says complaints to HRP prompted them to set up checkpoints on the Bedford highway near Main Ave. this week. Fourteen tickets were handed out Wednesday, with another 20 issued to drivers on Tuesday.

He says everyone is trying to take advantage of anything they can, but says using the bus lane isn’t worth adding to the congestion for everyone else.

HRM has long term plans for more priority bus lanes and Currie says he hopes they won’t be abused.
