HALIFAX – RCMP have laid a second-degree murder charge against a 30-year-old man after a body was found outside of a home in New Minas on Sunday morning.

RCMP Cpl. Jennifer Clarke said officers were called to Lockhart Drive just before 9:30 a.m. on Sunday where the man’s body was found by responding officers.

Nikolas Derrick Salsman was arrested in connection with the death on Sunday and RCMP confirmed early Monday afternoon that he’s now charged with second-degree murder.

Salsman appeared briefly in Kentville Provincial Court on Monday to be formally charged.

The name of the victim has not been released but The Chronicle Herald has identified him as 34-year-old Trevor Allen Joseph Pelton of New Minas.

Clarke said it’s believed Salsman and the victim were known to each other but couldn’t elaborate on their relationship.

The investigation remains ongoing and Clarke couldn’t rule out the possibility of more charges being laid.

Anyone with information is asked to call RCMP at 902-679-5561 or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers.
