HALIFAX – The province’s recent announcement over the abortion pill is being met with praise from the founder of Maritime Abortion Support Services.
Shannon Hardy describing it as a “lovely surprise”, adding women in the province will save hundreds of dollars as a result.
On Friday, the province announced it would be making Mifegymiso available to women in the province free of charge.
This came as a surprise to Hardy, who tells NEWS 95.7 the move will go a long way in helping obtain access to the medication.
“Right now if you need Mifegymiso it would cost $362, and that would come right out of your pocket,” said Hardy. “So that would be the major change.”
The province also announcing physician referrals are no longer required to have surgical abortions at the QEII, which Hardy says is a huge plus as many women do not feel comfortable approaching doctors about seeking an abortion.
But Hardy says she is hopeful the province will extend that courtesy to other hospitals across the province, as the distance to Halifax may be a barrier for some.
