Regional Police officer charged under MVA for crash that injured civilian

HALIFAX – The province’s police watchdog has laid charges under the Motor Vehicle Act against a Halifax Regional Police officer in connection to a traffic accident in May that left a civilian injured.

The Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) announced Friday two charges were being laid against Cst. Brandon Scott Hurley, 27, after an investigation into a crash that happened between his police vehicle and civilian car on May 16.

Just before 5 p.m. that day, Hurley was responding to a call and as he entered the intersection from Cogswell Street on to Quinpool Road, he collided with a car driven by a 33-year-old woman. She suffered a fractured collarbone in the crash.

Hurley is charged with failing to stop at a red light and failing to drive with due regard for all person using the highway. His first court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 25.

SIRT said the charges come after an investigation that included speaking to 11 civilian witnesses, two police witnesses, collecting video from two different sources and a forensic collision reconstruction report.
