Groups to gather in Halifax calling for release of Elders arrested at Muskrat Falls

HALIFAX – A solidarity event will be held today in support of three Labrador elders who were arrested at the gates of Muskrat Falls.
Marjorie Flowers, Eldred Davis and Jim Learning were taken into custody on July 21 after refusing to abide by a court injunction preventing them access to the site. The three are scheduled to appear in court Monday.
Mi’kmaq treaty rights holders, along with the council of Canadians, Sierra Club and Solidarity Halifax will be outside the offices of Nova Scotia Power on Lower Water St. later this morning, calling for the elders to be released and for the construction of the dam to be halted.
Protesters say construction of the dam will release harmful chemicals into Chruchill River and a nearby lake, bodies of water used by Indigenous peoples.
Demonstrations are also taking place in St. John’s, Happy Valley-Goose Bay and Ottawa to call for their release.
