Large fire in West End started by discarded cigarette, say officials

HALIFAX – Fire officials say the blaze that’s displaced about a dozen people from a West End apartment building was started by a discarded cigarette.

The fire extensively damaged the building, with flames leaping across to a home next door.

Halifax Fire’s Matt Covey telling Global News discarded smoking materials have caused 44 fires this year.

“To discard your smoking materials outside on your deck we would recommend a steel container with sand that’s cleaned out frequently,” said Covey.

The Canadian Red Cross is assisting a few people displaced by the fire.

No one was injured inside the building. A firefighter hurt his back battling the blaze.
