HALIFAX – Regional Police have laid a charge of second degree murder against a teenager in relation to the death of Chelsie Probert.

A 16-year-old boy from Dartmouth was arrested and charged Thursday morning, and remained in police custody pending a youth court appearance Friday.

The 18-year-old Probert was found injured in a pathway linking Albro Lake Rd. and Farrell St. Park late on the night of June 6. She was rushed to hospital but died of her injuries.

The medical examiner ruled her death a homicide shortly after.

‘No winners in situations like this’

During a press conference on Friday, Halifax Regional Police Superintendent Jim Perrin said they do not believe the two were known to each other.

“We are investigating this as a random act, and the evidence in this case will come out as a result of the court process,” he said.

Perrin described the investigation as “alarming”, considering the ages of the two involved.

“Obviously there is two young lives that have been affected and there’s families that have been impacted by this,” Perrin said.

“It’s impactful to people that live in the community, it’s impactful to emergency workers that respond to these cases. There’s no winners in situations like this.”

Perrin said they are not looking for any other suspects at this time, and despite the charge, the investigation continues.

They’re asking anyone with information to contact HRP or Crimestoppers.

Police add their thoughts remain with Probert’s loved ones at this difficult time.
