Students to acknowledge Mi’kmaq territory in school announcements

By Mark Hodgins

Students in the Halifax Regional School Board will soon hear something a little different in their morning announcements.

The board yesterday unanimously passed a motion to include an acknowledgment that schools stand on traditional indigenous territory.

The statement reads “We acknowledge that we are in Mi’kma’ki, which is the traditional ancestral territory of the Mi’kmaq people.”

Board member Nancy Jakeman said she hopes this move shows respect, helps educate young people and empowers our aboriginal youth.

Mi’kmaq representative Jessica Rose told Metro News she believes the statement will help indigenous students with their sense of pride.

The aim is to have the statement in place this fall.
