Suspicious death ruled a homicide, charges laid

Halifax Regional Police have ruled that a suspicious death in Dartmouth Friday night is a homicide.

Police were called to Hastings Drive after 7:42 p.m. where they found 35-year-old Nadia Gonzales unresponsive inside an apartment building, she was pronounced dead by EHS.

A man found outside the building was taken to hospital with what are believed to be life-threatening injuries.

Police took four men and one woman into custody and have since released three of the men without charges.

Calvin Maynard Sparks, 23, of Dartmouth has been charged with first degree murder, attempted murder, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and breach of probation.

Samanda Rose Ritch, 19, of Halifax has been charged with first degree murder, attempted murder, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and breach of recognizance.

Police do not believe this was a random incident and they expect to remain on the scene for at least the rest of the day.
