‘This gives people who are racist a pass’: Halifax Councillor speaks out on controversial video

HALIFAX – The regional councillor who lost a bid for election in Hammonds Plains-Lucasville in last week’s provincial election is speaking out about a video that had some in the community calling him a racist during the most recent campaign.

Matt Whitman took the criticism at the beginning of the campaign after a video of him participating in a so-called Chinese fire drill with his son while parked at an intersection was posted to YouTube.

Whitman told the Rick Howe Show that it was silly and it did become an election issue for him.

“It came up at the door,” Whitman said.

“I’ve had a lot of time to think about it and to think someone is racist for running around a car at a stop sign, that doesn’t make someone racist,” he said.

Whitman says by calling someone racist for doing something that was silly, or foolish gives people who are actually racist a pass, and ‘that is wrong’.
