Navy has to earn back trust after leaks, says military analyst

By Chris Halef

HALIFAX – A local military analyst says the Canadian navy will have to re-establish trust following allegations that the military’s second in command leaked cabinet secrets to pressure the liberal government.

Ken Hansen says the navy will have a lot of public relations work to do.

Hansen’s comments come after RCMP alleged Vice Admiral Mark Norman leaked cabinet documents to pressure the Trudeau liberals in approving $700 million contract.

Hansen says the admiral tried to circumvent the procurement system and betrayed trust as a result.

He tells NEWS 95.7 the navy in particular needs to step up and re-establish trust with the feds.

“This complaint came directly from the prime minister’s office and the clerk of the privy council,” says Hansen. “The public is going to be very concerned about what kind of people are commanding the navy.”

This comes at a time when recruitment in the navy is low, and Hansen believes this won’t help matters.

Hansen says this will have no effect on the contracts with C-Span and Irving.
