Former Olympian expresses disappointment with NHL decision on 2018 Olympics

A Nova Scotia native who donned the red and white of Team Canada at the Olympics before NHL players were allowed to play said he too is disappointed with the leagues decision to skip the games in South Korea.

The National Hockey League made the announcement Monday that it would not be pausing the season for the upcoming 2018 Olympics.

Fabian Joseph said by not allowing players like Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin to play at the games, country’s cannot put their best athletes on the ice.

Despite his disappointment Joseph said the positive side is it could bring back an old program. Fabian Joseph played in both the 1992 games in Albertville, and the 1994 games in Lillehammer as part of a now defunct national team program.

“Back then we had an on going national team, we were based out of Calgary and we represented Canada throughout the world in tournaments,” said Joseph.

“It was a great opportunity for guys like myself and even those young players who take that stepping stone before they get to the NHL.”

Joseph added that there will likely still be some players, like Ovechkin, who feel strongly enough about playing for their home country that they will defy the league directive and play in Korea.
