Nova Scotia has lack of access to home, long-term care says local doctor

By Connor Fraser

HALIFAX – A local doctor says Nova Scotia’s health-care system does need improvement.

This after the NSGEU released recommendations to deal with the alarming amount of code census calls at the Halifax Infirmary.

Professor of emergency medicine Dr. John Ross says there’s not a single reason that leads to overcrowding and it’s the whole system that needs reform.

“We don’t have great access to home care, we don’t have great access to long-term care,” said Dr. Ross. “And so the result is that the whole hospital starts being full all the time, and people keep showing up with their various illnesses.”

Ross believes the province is stuck in a political cycle where governments are looking for quick fixes while the health care system needs long term solutions.
