Mooseheads in tough as team gets set for game one against Rouyn-Noranda

HALIFAX – So it begins.

The Halifax Mooseheads hope to get their playoff run started with a win when the team plays the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies in game one of their first-round match-up Friday night in Quebec.

Halifax starts the series as the clear underdogs – the Herd squeaked into the playoffs as the 15th seed, while the Huskies were the second-best regular season team in the QMJHL.

But some old connections might help. Mooseheads’ Head Coach Andre Tourigny is no stranger to Rouyn-Noranda, having served as the club’s general manager from 2002-2013.

“Coach Tourigny knows the community, he knows the rink, he knows the players, he’s responsible for most of the drafting and trades that brought players in here over the last few years,” said Mooseheads play-by-play man John Moore. “So that’s a big advantage to the Halifax Mooseheads, knowing their opponent.”

But the odds are against Halifax’s team going into the series. The Herd can score, but so can the Huskies. On the defensive side, in the regular season Rouyn-Noranda allowed the third-fewest goals (181), while Halifax finished the season ranked fifth in that category, letting the puck in their net 259 times.

“They might be the fastest team in the entire league,” said Moore of the Huskies. “If you give them time and you give them space, they’re going to be vulnerable and they’re going to score some goals.”

The Mooseheads will look to contain that speed when the puck drops for game one, Friday night at 8:30.

As always, you can catch the game right here on NEWS 95.7 with John Moore.
