HALIFAX – What’s in a name?

A Dartmouth man whose last name appears on his vanity license plate is being told it is inappropriate.

Lorne Grabher says the province’s Department of Motor Vehicles has told him he can no longer display the plate on his vehicle, despite the fact the department has been issuing the vanity plate for years.

The deparment told Grabher the name could be constured as misogynist because it appears without any context.

“There is people that probably would take offence,” Grabher acknolwedged.

“But of all the time it’s been on the vehicle, it’s been across Canada, across the United States and everything, I have never had anyone come up to me and make a nasty remark.”

Grabher said his name is German and he first bought the plate for his dad back in 1991.

Since then the plate has been passed on through the family a number of times.
