Mooseheads snap losing streak, stay alive in bid for playoffs

HALIFAX – The Halifax Mooseheads snapped a seven game losing streak and stayed alive in the playoff race on Wednesday night, defeating the Charlottetown Islanders 6-5 in overtime at the Scotiabank Centre.

Halifax got off to a fantastic start with Maxime Fortier, Keigan Goetz and Benoit-Olivier Groulx each lighting the lamp to give Halifax a 3-0 lead after 20 minutes.

With the game eventually at 5-2 Mooseheads, Filip Chlapik, Kameron Kielly and Francois Beauchemin each scored consecutively to send the game into overtime where Coughler completed the hat trick to give Halifax the 6-5 win.

“We’re coming down to the last stretch and everybody’s really close in points, so this was a must-win game for us for sure,” Coughler told Mooseheads TV after the game.

The two points give Halifax 59 for the season, two up on the Rimouski Oceanic and three on the Sherbrooke Phoenix. The Herd now sits in 15th place, and the three teams will all fight to see who squeaks in to those last two playoff spots in 15th and 16th place.

Head Coach Andre Tourigny said the breathing room is important.

“It’s huge,” said Tourigny. “Nothing’s done, but it’s a step in the right direction.”

The Mooseheads won’t have long to dwell on the exciting victory, as the march to the playoffs continues on Friday against the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles. Halifax will look to call on the luck of the Irish as the team will be wearing special St. Patrick’s Day jerseys. That game goes at 7 p.m. at Scotiabank Centre, and you can catch it on NEWS 95.7.

Then on Saturday the team wraps up the regular season with another home tilt, this time against the Q’s best and one of the top junions teams in the entire country in the Saint John Sea Dogs.
