Many items still unaccounted for after review into missing drug locker items

HALIFAX – A report penned by a team reviewing the findings of a summertime audit into missing items in Halifax Regional Police drug lockers says more than half of the exhibits are still unaccounted for.

The audit, released in June 2016, found 72 items were missing. An internal review by police managed to find 34 of the items, according to a report that will be presented to the Police Board of Commissioners on Monday.

Of the remaining 38 items, 32 are believed to have been destroyed, while six – all sums of cash totalling nearly $5,000 – may have been deposited into a police account. That can’t be said for certain due to a lack of documentation, according to the report.

The report notes that no evidence has been found to suggest any of the items are missing due to misappropriation, but again, adds that cannot be said definitively.

Police say they will not be commenting until after the presentation is made to the board on Monday.
