Nova Scotia gives $20,000 senior safety grant to Victorian Order of Nurses

HALIFAX – Carleton Sanford has been a volunteer driver for the Victorian Order of Nurses here in Halifax for the last 17 years.

“I know what it’s like to go into the homes and find people that need help,” said Sanford on Thursday following an announcement from the Nova Scotia government that it will be providing $20,000 to the VON to enhance its senior safety programs.

Farview – Clayton Park MLA Patricia Arab made the announcement at the Victorian Order of Nurses’ Halifax office Thursday afternoon.

The Victorian Order of nurses is a national, not-for-profit home and community care organization. The $20,000 grant will be used to enhance existing programs by providing a focus on in-home safety assessments for seniors.

“This is going to allow us to talk to (seniors) about fall prevention, fraud, crime in the community,” said Erin Crosby, VON’s manager of community support services. “Really just to raise awareness and allow them a one-to-one experience to provide information to us if it’s something they have not been able to share with someone else.”

Sanford called the funding “tremendous”.

“Just to give them that lift to realize that they’ve got somebody on their side and they’re not alone and they’re not without,” Sanford said.

Happy as he was to hear of the funding and how it will be used to help, Sanford bluntly said it is not enough.

“It’s as much as you’re going to get,” said Sanford. “I’m happy though, and every little bit is a help.”
