Environment Canada says “significant snowfall” possible for Halifax mid-week

HALIFAX – After a light dusting of wet snow in Halifax over the weekend, Environment Canada has issued another Special Weather Statement for the area with “significant accumulations of snow” possible Tuesday into Wednesday.

News 95.7 Weather Specialist John Wilson says another low pressure system will make its way across much of Atlantic Canada Tuesday night, with a chance of snow ahead of it Tuesday afternoon and evening before it changes to rain.

Wilson predicts much like the weekend, Halifax will mostly be spared of the white stuff and see rain instead.

“It’s probably going to go the same way this one did, Wilson said, adding that “the further north and east and north and west you go from Halifax, the more snow is going to be in this.”

He predicts some areas could see up to 20 centimetres but Wilson doesn’t anticipate the same wind gusts that had 9,000 people across the province without power at its peak Sunday, but said “there could be another round of wet snow causing power outages and certainly more than we’ll see in the city.”

He said the temperatures will hover around the freezing mark so snow or freezing rain is still possible.

About 2,500 remained without power in the province just before 2 p.m. Monday, mostly in the Cape Breton region, with the power expected to be restored Monday evening.
