Mooseheads edge out Olympiques 6-5, finish home stand undefeated

HALIFAX – The Halifax Mooseheads wrapped up their home stand with a perfect 3-0 record, edging out the Gatineau Olympiques in overtime Monday afternoon.

The Mooseheads opened up scoring at 6:00 of the first period, with Connor Moynihan scoring his third goal of the home stand, and his fifth this season.

Gatineau’s Nicolas Meloche would tie things up less than two minutes later, but not long before Maxime Fortier and Otto Somppi scored back-to-back goals to help the Herd retake the lead.

Meloche would counter for the Olympiques once again, scoring less than thirty seconds later, making the score 3-2 at the end of the period.

Halifax answered back as Mooseheads’ rookie Benoit-Olivier Groulx scored on a breakaway at 5:17 of the second period, his third goal of the season.

The Herd continued to build on their lead as Bradley Kennedy closed out second period scoring with goal at 12:55, assisted by Otto Somppi and Maxime Fortier.

Gatineau came back strong, scoring three unanswered goals to tie the game at 5-5 early in the third period.

But it would be Swiss import Nico Hischier breaking the tie and scoring the game winner at 3:35 in overtime.

The Mooseheads head back out on road on Wednesday, when they take on the Acadie-Bathurst Titan at the Centre régional K.C. Irving.
