Halifax Central Library to re-open Thursday after suspicious package call

HALIFAX – The Halifax Central Library will re-open Thursday morning after a suspicious package call Wednesday afternoon prompted an evacuation of the building on Spring Garden Road that eventually closed early for the day.

Regional Police responded to a report of a suspicious package at the library around 3:40 p.m. Wednesday, which led to an evacuation of the building and the closure of several streets in the area as police investigated.

Sgt. Rob Lowther said the Explosives Disposal Unit responded to the scene and located the suspicious package and deemed it safe.

Police said the package, which remains suspicious at this point, will need to be further examined by investigators in the coming days.

A further search of the building turned up no other packages and the scene was cleared by police around 1 a.m.

Police are also informing anyone that had to leave belongings behind as the result of Wednesday’s evacuation can retrieve personal items by contacting the library after 7 a.m. Thursday.

It’s the second potential threat against the library after a bomb threat was received over the weekend but determined by police to be a hoax.

Anyone with information about either incident is asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers.

The latest call also comes amid a dozen reported bomb hoaxes since Sunday alone across the province, as on Tuesday alone, municipal police in Nova Scotia responded to hoaxes in Westville, Truro, Kentville and Bridgewater.

Police in HRM also responded to two threats on Monday, one at the Dartmouth Sportsplex and the other at the Cole Harbour High School.

Both turned up nothing suspicious.
