Kitchener council is fine with swine

A miniature pig has won over not just an owner and his family, but Kitchener City Council.

The 100-pound pot-bellied pig named Jackie can now lawfully live with her owner who needs the service animal to cope with drug and alcohol problems.

Kitchener City Councillor Frank Etherington represents the ward that “pork chop” lives in. He met with the pig and the man on a recent Sunday and was convinced that along with the Humane Society, the pig should stay with her partner.

Bylaw also reviewed the man’s case and OK’d the exception. There were also no complaints from residents about the pig. Jackie’s owner asked for the bylaw exemption and backed up his request with a doctor’s note saying pork chop should be considered a service animal.

On Monday, council reviewed the request and without debate, gave it their stamp of approval.

On his website, Councillor Etherington writes “after meeting Jackie, I was able to confirm Humane Society findings & on compassionate grounds, Jackie should be considered a service animal.”
