Ellie Black returns to Halifax after Olympics

Halifax gymnast Ellie Black returns to Halifax Friday morning after a record-breaking performance at the 2016 Olympics.

In Rio, the 20-year-old finished 5th in the individual all-around women’s artistic gymnastics, the best results ever for a Canadian in that event.

She was close to winning a spot on the podium, missing the bronze medal spot by less than a half-point.

Black told NEWS 95.7 she’s thankful for the support she received from the community.

“There was a viewing party at the library, all the gymnasts, friends, family and everyone came out,” she said. “I saw so much love from back home, it’s just incredible.”

That love will continue on Friday morning when Black lands at Halifax Stanfield International Airport.

Gymnastics Nova Scotia executive director Angela Gallant is inviting everyone out to come and welcome her home.

“We’re just hoping that people will show up at the airport with their signs and show their support,” Gallant said. “Just show her how proud we all are of what she’s done, what she’s accomplished and just give her that hero’s welcome that she so deserves.”

Black’s will be returning home on Air Canada flight 1190, it lands at 9:36 a.m.
