Glen Eugene Assoun bail hearing could lead to release

HALIFAX – A man whose murder conviction may have been the result of a wrongful conviction is expected in court today for a bail hearing that could lead to his release from prison.

A lawyer for Glen Eugene Assoun says the hearing will consider whether his client can be released while awaiting a final review by the federal Justice Department of his second-degree murder conviction.

The Justice Department said recently that a completed preliminary assessment shows there may have been a miscarriage of justice and a more in-depth investigation has been launched into the Assoun case.

Lawyer Sean MacDonald says the judge could rule that his client should be let out of prison after 17 years while he awaits the results of the final report by the Justice Department.

Assoun was sentenced to life in prison in 1999 for the stabbing of his girlfriend, but his lawyers want to use the preliminary assessment to help secure his freedom.

A publication ban has been placed on the evidence presented during the hearing.
