Atlantic Film Festival opens in Halifax

It’s a favourite time of year for film fanatics.

The 34th annual Atlantic Film Festival kicks off tonight, and executive director Wayne Carter told News 957 the schedule is jam-packed.

“We have everything from what are going to be Oscar-caliber Hollywood-type films like Foxcatcher with Channing Tatum and Steve Carrell, to art films from the Ukraine, Europe and South America,” said Carter.

Also highlighted at the AFF, movies showcasing the region’s industry.

“A lot of what we show are feature films, short films and documentaries that are made by Atlantic Canadians,” said Carter.  “A lot of times they are very much about the Atlantic Canadian experience.”

Along with individual tickets, there are 5 different passes that can be purchased by the public, and this year there’s a bonus.  Passholders get access to a Saturday night concert at the Marquee Ballroom featuring the Tragically Hip’s Gord Downie, The Sadies, Ben Caplan, Mo Kenney and Jenn Grant.

Tonight’s opening night film is Quebec-director Charles Binamé’s Elephant Song starring Xavier Dolan, both will walk the red carpet at the Rebecca Cohn.
